In all the recent stories I have heard on the news or seen in the newspapers I felt I should write this column to get some things out in the open about the treatment of animals in today’s society.
Some may know of the hypo-allergenic cats they are now working on. Yes that’s right, scientists are genetically altering our favorite lazy pets. Those cute little balls of fluff that lie around all day or play with balls of yarn. The first batch of hypo-allergenic cats are expected to be available in early 2007 according to the group altering our house cats. I myself am not allergic to cats, but I still find it wrong that people really find it necessary to mess with an animal’s genetic code for the humans comfort. What about the animals? How many cats will end up dying because of the experimentation involved with all of this? Even more disgusting is that you can pre-order your brand new genetically altered cat right now. Just go to yahoo and do a search with the words hypo allergenic cats. Look and see what comes up. First people decide to alter our food, now they are altering are pets. What will they be altering next?

Now how many of you know of Botox? Yeah, I thought so, a majority. Well, did you know that the company tests their product on animals? Did you know that the makers of Botox are responsible for 50% of the animal’s deaths? Due to a lawsuit from a California woman against Allergan (the makers of Botox) for supposedly causing her headaches due to their drug, the company must now deal with the court of public opinion. Over what? “The indisputable fact that animals suffer and die in the potency testing of Botox. And while Botox has serious therapeutic applications, these animals die increasingly for nothing more serious than to smooth out wrinkle lines.” Yes that’s right, they have killed hundreds of animals to get their product right and are continuing to do so. You see before Allergan releases a batch of Botox to doctors and dermatologists they need to “determine the right potency of Botox – the key ingredient of which is botulinum toxin, the most poisonous substance known to mankind – Allergan uses a highly questionable test known as LD50, whose sole purpose is to find the dose that kills 50% of the animals used in the test.” Yes, you did read that right. I had to double over on that one. Want to know what the LD stands for? Lethal Dose. The full name of the test is Lethal Dose 50 Percent. So ladies next time you go in for your Botox shot, think of how many animals they killed in order for you to have the “right” dose to get rid of a few minor wrinkles that no one notices anyways.

As for this upcoming election, some of you voters will notice propositions and initiatives on the ballot. Look carefully at some of these. An excerpt from the HSUS story, “Alaska, Arizona and Florida will each ask voters on November 2 whether or not to drastically change the rules by which citizens can place initiatives on state-wide ballots. If these measures are passed, they will effectively handcuff activists who are frustrated with lobby-influenced legislatures and who want to put animal or environmental-related questions directly to the voters. Interestingly enough, citizens in each of these three states have, in recent years, passed initiatives to help animals, whether it was Floridians banning gestation crates in 2002 or Arizonans banning leghold traps in 1992. Not only are trophy hunters and other animal exploiters trying to cut off the initiative process to activists, but they're also trying to legally protect their own "right" to hunt. In Montana, for instance, voters will be asked whether citizens have the "right to hunt," a term that could essentially protect trophy hunters' right to use whatever inhumane and unsportsmanlike method they choose. At least eight ballot measures will be put to the voters in six states on November 2. "This upcoming election is crucial for animals in both the short term and long term," said Wayne Pacelle, president of The Humane Society of the United States. "Voters in Maine and Alaska can stop hunters from employing unsportsmanlike techniques in stalking bears, which would have an immediate impact on the animals. On the other hand, voters in Alaska, Arizona and Florida can reject these outrageous attempts to tamper with the citizen initiative process; their rejection could benefit animals for years and years to come." Look at your ballots carefully. Make the right choice. For more information about the ballots in the states go here www.hsus.org/ace/21631 and look at the HSUS guide after the story.
How many of you know what’s going on with the gray wolves? Not many do. The gray wolves have been on the endangered species list for years upon years. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is planning to remove the gray wolves from the endangered lists. This means that in areas where the wolves are protected currently by U.S. laws, the wolves will no longer be safe. There are already plans in progress if Fish and Wildlife go through with the premature actions of removing the gray wolf from its list. Without the protection of US laws, these beautiful creatures could very well end up back on the list in no time at all. The gray wolf populations are still dwindling as is, even in the most populated wolf areas. Please help out and get your voice heard to save the wolves. www.hsus.org/ace/21462
Now for all you cat owners out there. This next one is important for you to read during this Halloween season. Taken from HSUS (http://www.hsus.org/ace/19896 ) “Patricia Wallace's house on Long Island, New York looks like many others this time of the year: outfitted with the spooky Halloween decorations that seem as harmless and common as cobwebs in the basement.
Only now, Wallace associates these commercially sold frights with a true horror: the death of her cat, Tabitha.
One recent October day, Wallace's one-and-a-half year old cat ate some fake sinewy cobwebs that were stretched across the homeowner's bay window. Like something out of a bad horror flick, the bogus spider web ensnared a very real victim: Tabitha's intestines became clogged after consuming the synthetic product.
Wallace was working one of her two jobs when Tabitha decided to take a bite out of the cobweb, but once she got home, she immediately noticed something was wrong with her kitty. What Wallace didn't immediately know, however, was the cause.
"Tabitha used to follow me like a puppy dog," Wallace said. But on this day, Wallace noticed the black-and-white polydactyl feline was acting "very funky."

Please heed the words from Mr. Sodergren and the Humane Society. Please be careful with your decorations and keep your pets safe. Also this upcoming Christmas keep your dogs away from your trees. The needles on Christmas trees are poisonous to dogs and can kill them easily. So watch those puppies Mom and Dad.
How many of you have heard of the “art” being displayed in a Sweden art gallery.
There's an artist, Nathalia Edenmont, who kills cats, mice, doves, RABBITS, and other animals, mutilates their bodies, and then takes their photographs. She's on exhibit, among other places, at the Wetterling Gallery in Sweden. She has taken the top halves of five white mice and made them into finger puppets. She beat a cat to death with a stick. And this is called art. This is not only inhumane, but morally reprehensible.
