Michelle was 15 at the time of her grandfathers death. She had good relationship with her cousins. Until a week before her grandfather's death. Her grandfather meant the world to her. He taught her a lot in the years she had to live with him. When he went into the hospital it broke her heart. He was in ICU for a week before being moved into the hospice ward. It took her days to go and look at him in that hospital bed, but when she did she was glad. She knew it wouldn't be that small and weakless look of him she'd remember, but all the times he taught her the tricks of the trade for doing regular house repairs. He had her respect from day one it seemed. He was more of a father to her than her real father was. He didn't judge and he always listened. He was her best friend and father and her grandfather. For all of that, he was the man she looked up to for her peace of mind. She had complete respect for the retired Marine. And now he was gone.
That wasn't what got to her. She knew he was with her grandmother and was finally happy again. What got to her was that her cousins had no such respect for them. No, in fact they didn't visit him at all when he was in the hospital, not once. She hadn't lost much respect for them for that. It was slightly understandable. What made her lose her respect for them completely was the fact they showed up late for his funeral. They had no respect for the dead, especially for their own grandfather. It made her angry and she wanted to yell and scream at them, but she did not want to stoop down to their low. They never had respect for him, ever since he kicked their family out because all they could do was argue with him and his wife, their grandmother. That's when their relationship went down the drain.
Michelle never found the guts to tell them she hated them. She never felt she could. She didn't want to stoop down to a place where her grandfather would be ashamed of her. She had no respect for them and they would never know. They didn't think much of her either. She didn't know why. They never talked to her or looked at her. She didn't care though. It seemed though, that every time she saw them, she struggled to smile at them and act like life was fine and dandy. She knew that if she let something slip, it would tear the family up completely, a heavy load for someone who was emotionally weak.

Chris was 19 when his grandfather went into the hospital and died. He didn't think much of his grandfather. They had been at each other's necks for years on end. He had no respect for his grandfather. He felt abandoned by him. His little brother Jacob was the same way. No respect. Neither one of them visited their grandfather while he was in the hospital. Not once. They didn't want to see him in that condition. Understandable, but wrong. When the day came for his funeral, the cemetary was only an hour away from them. They still left late and barely made it in time. They missed the three hour viewing and memorial for him and barely made it for the graveside service. No one except their mother and sister talked to them. They didn't even know why. Their cousin Michelle started to ignore them that day. They were too blind to see why. Afterwards she would say a few words and have a smile on her face. They knew something was wrong. One day they decided to confront her about it. She denied the truth and told them all lies. They lived in the dark for ages and for ages wouldn't know. This was how she liked it and how they would have liked it had they known both sides of the story.

After years of having respect, it was easily lost. They guys deserved no respect and never will regain it. For the respect Michelle had for her grandfather and the love she had for him by far outweigh the connections or feelings she had for her cousins. Respect is easily lost and not so well earned.
~~~Based off of the truth with names changed... Umm.. really old story... or at least old enough to where i usually forget about it...
